The first picture I ever created (legible picture, that is!) was of a black bird wearing a crown, entitled “The King of The Birds.” I drew the picture in an old scrapbook, with crayons out of an old box of Crayolas–both given to me by my grandma. (The crayons truly were ‘old,’ and had previously been used 20 years earlier by my mother and uncles during their childhood!) In retrospect, I guess I chose this particular subject matter because my grandma loved watching birds, and I wanted to impress her with my skills! I was genuinely interested and enjoyed art, but whats more, my grandma never acted that impressed, and no matter what I did, her drawing was still so much better than mine! I guess there was a method to the madness, because it drove me to work harder, and explore my ability.
There was something about creating art with my grandma, those crayons, and the old scrapbook she gave me in which to practice drawing. I filled every page in that scrapbook…and many books to follow!
The gift of creativity cultivated in me by my grandma, blossomed into a beautiful and fruitful tree, filled with many different talents, mediums, and works of art. The most important thing to me about being an artist, is the journey of self discovery. The world of art is the one realm where all things truly are possible! I am happy my grandma inadvertently pushed me so hard. Creativity is a wonderful thing to have in spades, and creating art carries us through the darkest of times. The most beautiful thing about art is that every person can do it! I hope some of my work brightens your day and inspires you to be adventurous in your creative pursuits. Thanks for stopping by!
